While this may be generally true as you have seen it, a noteable exception is
the intentional communities movement. Last quarters issue of Communities
Magazine was focused exclusively on how both urban and rural intentional
communities (many, many of which are focused primarily on sustag and
permaculture, light living, etc.) are preparing for y2k. Each community
represented in the issue has a different take and is doing very different and
very interesting things. However to every question y2k brings, intentional
community has provided the answer. You can get a copy from http://www.ic.org
The organization I am a part of, The School of Living, has also had meetings
and planning sessions on y2k. The community I am hoping to soon join, focused
on permaculture education, has a rudimentary y2k plan coming into place as
well. Be prepared for the worst, hope for the best. Preparing for y2k is
bringing us closer, sooner to our own sustainability and self-sufficiency goals.
At home here in DC, the local food security/urban sustag network is working
diligently on shoring up a local organic food system in time for y2k.
Committees meet weekly.
Just cause some of the more glossy enviro/sustag pubs aren't actively
addressing the issue, doesn't mean there isn't a lot going on behind the scenes.
