The Goal of this Electronic Conference (e-conference) is to give YOU an
opportunity to particpate in a global analysis and discussion "success
stories" drawn from experiences throughout the world and to contribute
to the development of recommendations for implementation and policy
options for sustainable agriculture and land management by capitalizing
on what has been learned to date.

This Electronic Conference (e-conference) is one component of a larger
stock-taking process implemented by FAO and Netherlands prior to a
face-to-face conference on the same subject that will be held in the
Netherlands in September 1999. The overall objective of both the
stock-taking process and the conference in the Netherlands is to to
develop practical ways for society, at different scales, to promote
sustainability by increasing the awareness of the multiple functions of
agriculture in its heterogeneous and interdependent social, economic,
biological, and physical environments. The process will contribute
directly to the the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development

(CSD-8) which was established to monitor the implementation of the Rio
1992 Summit on Environment and
Development.

This e-conference will begin on Februrary 1, 1999 and end 8-weeks later
on
March 27. After welcome messages from the E-conference organizers, the
moderatators will send out a keynote paper for discussion and comments.
Case studies submitted both prior to and during the E-conference will
then be analyzed and used to illustrate different types of successful
sustainable agriculture and integrated land management. These success
stories, drawn from experiences throughout the world, will form the
basis for discussions of alternative "success pathways" or
recommendations for moving between present and future environments.
During the last weeks of the e-conference
participants will be encouraged to send in draft guidelines and
recommendations for comments and discussion by other conferees.
