DIRECTOR OF SUSTAINABILITY & ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
Berea College invites applications and nominations for the position of Director
of a new Program designed to integrate sustainability and environmental themes
into student experience. The Director provides leadership and vision for the
Program in all of its curricular, professional development, and co-curricular
activities. Beyond primary teaching and scholarship responsibilities, the
Director works across disciplinary, administrative, and institutional boundaries
to develop and coordinate opportunities for student learning and faculty
development. Commitment to superior teaching in a liberal arts environment and
a doctorate in some area of sustainability and/or environmental studies are
essential. This full-time, tenure-track position reports to the Provost.
Berea College is a four-year institution devoted to undergraduate education
rooted in the liberal arts. The College's mission includes special commitments
to students of limited economic means and high ability, the Appalachian region,
interracial and intercultural education, and the development of perspectives and
values deeply informed by the Christian faith. A full tuition scholarship for
each student and a work program in which all students participate have long been
distinctive features of a Berea education. Though many students are the first
in their families to attend college, Berea ranks among the leading colleges in
the South in percentage of graduates who earn Ph.D. degrees. The College is
located 30 miles south of Lexington, Kentucky in the town of Berea (pop.
10,000).
Applicants should send a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, transcripts,
and at least three letters of recommendation to Susan Vaughn, Senior
Administrative Assistant to the Provost and Dean, Berea College, Berea, KY
40404. Review of applications will begin March 1, 1999 and continue until the
position is filled. Expected starting date is September, 1999. In keeping with
the College's inclusive Christian tradition and its emphasis on the dignity and
worth of all persons, Berea College embraces and values diversity through
encouragement of applications from women and members of minority groups.
