INVITATION: - ELECTRONIC CONFERENCE ON THE MULTIFUNTIONAL
CHARATER OF AGRICULTURE AND LAND

We would like to invite you to participate in a global electronic
conference on the Multifunctional Character of Agriculture and Land. The
Goal of this e-conference is to analyze and discuss "success stories"
drawn from experiences throughout the world and to develop
recommendations for implementation and policy options for sustainable
agriculture and land management. This e-conference is one component of
a larger stock-taking process that is being implemented by FAO and
Netherlands prior to a face-to-face conference on the same subject that
will be held in the Netherlands in September 1999. The overall objective
of both the stock-taking process and the conference in the Netherlands
is to develop practical ways for society, at different scales, to
promote sustainability by increasing the awareness of the multiple
functions of agriculture in its heterogeneous and interdependent social,
economic, biological, and physical environments.

This e-conference will begin on February 1, 1999 and end 8-weeks later
on March 27. After welcome messages from the E-conference organizers,
the moderators will send out a keynote paper for discussion and
comments. Case studies submitted both prior to and during the
E-conference will then be analyzed and used to illustrate different
types of successful sustainable agriculture and integrated land
management. These success stories will form the basis for discussions
of alternative "success pathways" or recommendations for moving between
present and future environments. During the last weeks of the
e-conference participants will be encouraged to send in draft guidelines
and recommendations for comments and discussion by other conferees.

In order to participate in this e-conference all you need to do is to
subscribe to Ag-Success-L Email List. To subscribe send a one-line email
message that reads:

You will receive an acknowledgement of your subscription. We look
forward to your participation in this important event. Please pass on
this invitation to your colleagues. This represents an opportunity for
everyone concerned about sustainable agriculture to influence global
policy.
