Tenth Annual Upper Midwest Organic Farming Conference March 4-6, 1999
The tenth Upper Midwest Organic Farming Conference is set for March 4-6,
1999. The theme this year - "Organic Works ~ At Home and Around the
World" - reflects the growing of organic agriculture in the Midwest and
around the world. The conference will again be located at Sinsinawa
Mound Center in southwest Wisconsin (12 miles northeast of Dubuque,
IA). The conference facility is a beautiful, spacious conference center
and features a working organic farm surrounding the site.
A few of the 40 workshops offered include: Local Food Systems, Using
Cover Crops to Build Soil Fertility, Marketing Organic Grains in
Domestic and Asian Markets, Beneficial Insects, Bee Keeping, Parasite
Control in Livestock, Saving Public Domain Seed Strains, Using
Greenhouses to Extend Your Season, Zen and the Art of Fencing, USDA
Organic Rules, Where's the Meat? Organic Meat Labeling Issues, Buckwheat
- How to Grow and Sell, Making Quality Compost, and so many more! The
keynoters include: Elizabeth Henderson, Michael Ableman, and a panel on
Organic Agriculture Around the World.
One of the new highlights will be Thursday seminars. These five-hour
sessions will cover each topic in-depth. There will be four to five
seminars offered and each will be limited to 50 participants. The
topics include: Transitions to Organic Farming Practices - Cover Crops,
Soil Building, Crop Rotations and More; Selecting and Saving Public
Domain Seed Strains; Designing Permaculture Systems for the Small Farm;
Biodynamics; and Holistic Livestock Management.
This year, for the first time ever, the UMOFC has a Web site. The Web

working on putting together all the details for the conference and will
have information on workshops/keynoters available by the end of
November, 1998.
The UMOFC offers a unique opportunity to learn and share ideas with
others interested in organic agriculture. The exhibit hall is an event
in itself, featuring over 70 booths. Registration fee is $75 for two
days.
