Glad your speaking up for calcium! I think it is an under rated nutrient
although I have no good research to back it up, just my own
observations. I've made an effort (and have achived) to get my base
saturation Ca levels up toat least 75%. My Mg was 25% 8 years ago and
now I have it back down to 12-15% where it should be. I think the Ca/Mg
ratio is what is most important and have K around 5%.
I know there are some promoting extremely high lime rates (8-10
ton/acre) in order to get alot of Ca. I've done some small test plots
and haven't seen a difference. I do know that my soils have "loosened"
up the last few years but that is also due to the use of covers and
notill. I haven't had blossom end rot as much on tomatoes lately either.
I have been irrigating more so that has a positive effect as well. I
hope to hear what others have experienced with Ca.
