DC Food System

I need help finding studies that have been done about the
DC are food system. Namely, where are people getting
their food now? Where does this food come from? How
much is produced within the region? How is it sold? What
are people eating? But we are looking for specific
information, just not general numbers.

Is there someone now doing a study in this area?

A group of people have been meeting regularly to discuss
how to make DC's Food system more just and sustainable.
We have come to agree that we would like to see this food
system become more regional, with a larger percentage of
food consumed within the Washington DC area coming
from local farmers -- thus preserving farmland, open space
and having our food be more fresh and healthy. We would
like to see ALL communities of the Washington DC area
have equal access to fresh, wholesome food, which is
presently not the case for too many of our area's
communities. The barriers that hinder regionalization and
accessibility are numerous and complex, and that's why we
meet regularly and invite others (yes, you!) to join us. We
have identified a number of information gaps which
consistently frustrate our discussions, but this lack of
information about the DC Food System is one of the main
gaps.
