Jordan, a professor and research/extension/instruction coordinator in
the Department of Agriculture and Applied Economics, has been at the
Station since 1982. Rick Welsh, Southern SARE's past director, worked
as an adjunct professor in the same department. Jordan, who is
assuming the SARE duties in addition to his faculty responsibilities,
sees a natural connection between ag economics and sustainable ag
research. He will be using his faculty position to initiate research
evaluating the impact of sustainable ag research on southern
agriculture.
Jordan's previous research has addressed water issues, and he teaches
a course in water economics at the University of Georgia's main campus
in Athens. He is also an adjunct professor of economics at Mercer
University, where he teaches introductory micro and macro economics.
He has served as chairman of the Spalding County Water Authority, is a
trustee of the American Water Works Association's Conservation
Division and chair of its Planning and Evaluation Committee. He also
chairs the Steering Committee for the National Water Efficiency
Clearinghouse and is past-president of the Georgia Water Wise Council.
A native of Illinois, Jordan grew up outside of Detroit and received a
B.A. in international relations and Japanese studies followed by an
M.S. and a Ph.D. in agricultural economics, all from Michigan State
University. Before coming to Georgia, Jordan worked for the Governor
of Michigan and taught economics in Michigan. He has delivered papers
in Australia, New Zealand, Poland, Belgium and Holland. In 1988 he was
a Visiting Research Scholar at Kagoshima University in Japan. In 1991 he was
a Fellow at the National Center for Food and Agricultural policy.
