Note the small farm emphasis in the Ag Systems program below. The
deadline for that program is February 15. Note that the NRI funds
much basic research, although the line between basic and applied can
be blurry, and Ag Systems projects are probably often more applied
than in some other program areas. You can view abstracts of
previously-funded projects at the NRI web site
(http://www.reeusda.gov/nri/) to get an idea of the kind of thing
that they have funded in the past. They also categorize their
projects as to whether they fall into sustainable agriculture or not
(again, the line is not black and white, but the sorting can help you
hone in on those of most interest), I don't believe you can pull them
out on that basis from their web site, but the NRI staff have
provided me with 3 reports from their database that include those
projects classified as sust ag for 1995, 1996 and 1997 (each file is
a text file for one year, with titles/P.I.'s/amts only, but you can
then search for the corresponding abstract on their web site.) Each
file is about 30K, so I don't want to post to the list, but would be
happy to forward all 3 files to anyone who wants to send me an email
request.

Happy New Year,

The USDA CSREES National Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program
(NRI) is pleased to announce that a Supplemental NRI Program Description
has been released and is now available on the NRI home page at
www.reeusda.gov/nri. This supplement describes a new Epidemiological
Approaches to Food Safety Program, an amendment to the Animal Genome and
Genetic Mechanisms Program which expands the program to include the
development of basic reagents and tools for animal genome research, and
an emphasis in the Agricultural Systems Program regarding small farm
research.

Paper copies of this document, the original Program Description and the
NRICGP Application Kit can be obtained by sending your name and postal
address and list of documents desired to psb@reeusda.gov. Paper copies of
the NRI Program Description may not be available until the middle of
January.

Questions regarding NRI documents or programs can be directed to the
NRI at (202) 401-5022 or nricpg@reeusda.gov.
