I might suggest that if you find your subsoil inappropriate or other problems
in getting your planned root cellar under ground that you consider going
above. I recently was able to check out a straw bale vegetable storage, that
was built into a corner of an existing barn. It was built by some friends who
run a CSA, and wanted to expand their ability to store fruit and vegetables for
themselves, but also to store food for deliverlies to their customers. Same
priciples of building as for a regular strawbale, except that they used a
concrete exterior that they were going to put a moisture barrier over. Same
speed of construction. I do believe it was completed in two odd days. If you
have some questions would be glad to help out.
