Appropriate email management software will make much of the problem disappear,
or at least be extremely easy for people to manage. I am vigorously
researching software options for this purpose, and will report back to the
group when I know what's available.

I come from a background with BBS services (not Internet). Such software
tools are readily available for combination with BBSs, and I'm sure we'll find
them or have them written to work with "real" internet email, too.

So, rather than splitting the list, please consider offering list members
access to appropriate mail list management software. That should solve 90+%
of the problem.
