This summer course is open to students from anywhere, graduate or
undergraduate. Credits should easily transfer to almost any college or
university. Please share with anyone who may be interested. Class will be
limited to no more than 30 students. (Beaver Island is the largest island in
Lake Michigan, about half way between Charlevoix and Green Bay, Wisconsin.)

Sustainable Community Development Course

Resource Development 491 (3 credits)
Michigan State University

May 18 -- August 17, Wednesdays, 6-9 p.m.

Participate in an applied research project designed to help the

people of Beaver Island, Michigan, to help themselves. Any and

all sustainable development concepts are available for study,

including energy economics, environmental and social impacts

analysis, and technology assessment for wind, wood, and solar

energy, waste management, transportation, etc. Faculty and

students from five Michigan colleges and universities are

already participating, along with government and private sector

professionals. The course combines studies at MSU and field

trips to Beaver Island.

The Beaver Island project is now entering its third year.

Already, students and faculty have helped to prepare an

inventory of Island energy uses and renewable energy options. A

Master Plan for Island development is nearing completion.

Coming soon will be work on an economic development action plan.

Instructor: Thomas S. Stanton, adjunct faculty member with

Michigan State University, Department of Resource Development.

Mr. Stanton is a staff member at the Michigan Public Service

Commission, with over 15 years experience in energy efficiency,

renewable energy, and utility resource planning. He is a Doctor

of Public Administration candidate at Western Michigan

University.
