BROWN BAG LUNCH ANNOUNCEMENT FOR FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 18,
Please join us from 12:30 - 2 p.m. on Friday, February 18th for
a meeting with Dr. Charles Benbrook, who will talk about leveraging
change in international institutions. A consultant in international
agriculture issues, Chuck is currently working with the United
Nations Development Program (UNDP), where he is looking at
indicators of sustainability in the agriculture sector; program
evaluation; and the FAO/UNDP interface in working towards
sustainable agriculture and rural development (SARD).
He will speak about his current work with UNDP and past work
with FAO. Chuck attended the Den Bosch meeting at FAO's request
and wrote a report for FAO expanding upon options to pursue SARD.
This report, following extensive revisions, is about to be released by
FAO, and is now entitled "Strategies for Sustainable Ag and Rural
Development (SARD): The Role of Agriculture, Forestry, and
Fisheries." We have asked Chuck to share his sense of the new
version of the report, and to reflect upon how it has changed since
it was drafted. His comments should provide perspective on how
things have evolved in FAO in terms of policies and priorities.
Chuck's comments on how FAO and UNDP can more effectively work
together in support of SARD is relevant to individuals and groups
working on UNCED follow-up, including national/regional level
programs and the 1995 session of the Commission on Sustainable
Development at the UN, which will address SARD.
