High Tech Gardening Magazine Enters the Online World
January 3, 1994 -- The Electronic Newsstand ( a.k.a. "Enews") announces
that it has made available selections from The Growing EDGE, a quarterly
magazine with a focus on innovative methods of gardening and
the cultivation of plants.
Since 1989, The Growing EDGE has been reporting on the
latest developments in indoor and outdoor high tech gardening.
Greenhouses, environmental controls, computer garden controls,
artificial lighting, hydroponics (systems, designs, and supplies),
irrigation and water conservation, new organic methods and techniques,
biodiversity remediation, aquaculture, plant propagation and breeding
have all been reported on regularly for the professional grower and
hobby gardener.
Various selections from each issue are made available in plain text on
the Electronic Newsstand's Gopher server, located on the Internet at
"gopher.internet.com" Gopher is a menu-oriented client-server information
browsing and retrieval tool originally developed at the University of
Minnesota. Internet users with access to a Gopher client program can simply
specify "gopher gopher.internet.com" at their command prompt; other Internet
users may use the Gopher client program provided by the Internet Company,
accessed by remote-login ("telnet gopher.internet.com" -- when requested to
provide a "login" name, use: enews). (Both methods require a user account
with real-time Internet access, such as from a connected company or
university, online service such as DELPHI or BIX, or public-access sites like
NYC's PANIX, DC's Digex, SF's Portal, Boston's World or California's Netcom.)
