Lelani -- The person you will want to speak with at The Land Institute is
Marty Bender, the director of the Sunshine Farm project. The number in
Salina is (903) 823-5376. Also check out the book "Meeting the Expectations
of the Land" by Jackson, Berry and Colman -- there is a chapter on energy
use and ag that may be of interest. TLI would have copies for sale.
In addition, you may want to contact the Rocky Mountain Institute outside
of Aspen, CO. The have had an agricultural energy program for some time,
though I don't know its status. RMI is a leader in computing energy use and
searching for ways to increase efficiency.
Finally, I realize your distance from a library might be an obstacle, but
I believe in 1980 the USDA's Yearbook focused on energy use in
agriculture. I only glanced at it, so I don't know all the details. Since
it was published before the interest in "sustainable systems," it might not
be a complete reference, but a good staring point.
Best of luck, Doug Romig
