Subject: Welcome

Welcome to the IRM e-mail discussion list. The purpose of this list is to
exchange information about integrated resource management relevant to range
livestock operations. Complementary lists on public land issues and
livestock market outlook have also been implemented.

Mechanics: An e-mail discussion list is simply an e-mail address
(irm@ag.srnr.arizona.edu) which redistributes all e-mail sent to it to all
the members of the list. Therefore if you have questions about IRM or
information about IRM to share simply e-mail the list address and your
message will be forwarded to all members of the list. If you wish to reply
to a message that has appeared on the list be sure the address the reply is
sent to is irm@ag.srnr.arizona.edu if you wish all members of the list to
receive your reply.

For someone new to become a member of the list they can send e-mail to:

IRM-owner@ag.srnr.arizona.edu.

In the text of the e-mail include "subscribe IRM ( name)" Obviously they
use their real name ,no parenthesis needed, after the word IRM. They will
be notified by return e-mail that they have been added to the mailing list.
If you decide to quit the list simply follow the same procedure but use
the word unsubscribe.

Associated with the discussion list are file archives of reference material
relevant to integrated resource management To submit material to the
archive FTP it to the incoming IRM directory at ag.srnr.arizona.edu also
send an e-mail to Rgum@ag.srnr.arizona.edu with a brief description of the
file contents. The preferred format for files in the archive is Adobe
Acrobat .pdf files. Text or postscript files will also be accepted in the
archives. If you have questions about file formats or about the process of
uploading or receiving files feel free to e-mail me
(Rgum@ag.srnr.arizona.edu) with any questions. At present the Arizona
Ranchers Management Guide is available in postscript format. The .pdf
version will be posted shortly.

At present FTP is operational. Gopher access will be operational soon.
FTP ag.srnr.arizona.edu login as anonymous and look for the IRM directory.
The official path to it is ftp/pub/irm.

As we build up a set of information on IRM issues at this server we will
organize them as a hyper text information server document. Specifically we
will have a Mosaic server connected to the World Wide Web. This will allow
organization of our information sources into categories much as in an
outline and allow us to make electronic links to other internet sites with
information relevant to IRM issues. Unless you have used the Mosaic
software and explored the WWW you won't have the foggiest idea of what this
means. The best way to find out is to ftp to ncsa.uic.edu and get yourself
a copy of mosaic in a flavor (UNIX, Mac or windows) suitable to your
machine and try it.

Again welcome to the list. Please feel free to e-mail me any comments or
suggestions about this information service. Hopefully, with your help, we
can start to develop an electronic information base and communication forum
for IRM.
