USDA INTERNATIONAL UPDATE
**************************************************
14 December 1998
International Research, Teaching and Extension - University
Participation
USDA is looking to foster institutional relationships between US
Universities and the Armenian Agricultural Academy in Yerevan, Armenia.
The Academy is currently a teaching university with 4,000 students and 400
faculty. A PhD program exists in the disciplines of Agronomy,
Veterinarian Science, Animal Science and Engineering Technologies. The
Academy is under the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture and
administered by a Rector (Dr. Arshalouys Tarverdian) who reports to the
Deputy Minister for Science and Education. Efforts to date include a
strategic planning exercise, curriculum review and resource assessment in
the Ag Economics Department, development of a computer lab, short term
training in the US for faculty and students in marketing and economics,
seminars and workshops at the Academy by US technical advisors. USDA is
working with the World Bank and the Armenian Ministry of Agriculture to
integrate the Research Centers and Extension Service under Academy
leadership and to develop a responsive and applied research and outreach
capacity that serves the private agricultural sector. Efforts in 1999
will include the recruitment of a one-year university professional at the
Academy as a Research and Extension Advisor who will coordinate USDA and
World Bank effort, placement of Armenian students in US Universities for
Masters degrees, recruiting technical advisors in food processing,
marketing, TEFL, economics disciplines and extension to provide classroom
and field expertise.
USDA is considering involving one US University that would provide
leadership, programmatic and logistical support for this effort and
coordinate other university participation. Interested individuals or
departments are encouraged to develop a concept paper for consideration.
