No, there's no big mystery. I daresay the antibiotic makers "honestly" don't
think the risks of growing bacterial immunity to useful antibiotics
are great enough to warrant concern, but the EC scientists "honestly" think
they do. We also have to look beyond the growing scientific evidence that
GM is dangerous to the character of the production systems that are being
evolved here. I think GM is a strategic mistake because it is part of a
process that distances the production process from both the individual
consumer and the specific local ecology. The insurance companies would find
it even more difficult still to quantify or even recognise this risks in
this process, but in my personal opinion it is very, very significant. I am
not a technophobe, but I hate the deification of technology and science
which leads us to deny a downside to any clever trick.
