salt build up

Hi,
We live in an area that has pretty hard water(well water with a lot of
calcium, iron and other minerals in it. These minerals shorten the life span
of household appliances(especially the water heater), and stain light
colored dress clothes. The typical solution for this problem is to buy a
water softener. I was wondering what happens to all the salt that goes into
a water softener.

Does it just magically disappear like a lot of other waste from society?

If not, where does all that salt go?

Does it effect the environment?

Does it eventually leach into the ground water?

Is this an issue of sustainability?

Are there better water softeners that are safer to use?

Are there alternatives to water softeners?

Is it best to call, "Hey Culligan Man", and let them deal with the salt?

Do they handle the salt differently than a house on a farm?

I'd appreciate any information on this subject.

Thanks,
Greg
