I am not a Hog Farmer, but I do a lot of research that involves
parasite control (in people, alternative medicine, etc.), and had a few
ideas about it. Maybe some of my ideas are something you'd like to try.
I figured I should speak up, so here goes--
Pumpkin seeds are a great parasiticide for people-- Can you feed
Pumpkin Chunks to hogs, with the seeds still in them? It's the seed oil
that does it-- Can you mix seed oil with the feed as an alternative? Or
P. seed cake, or P. seed meal?
Also, the green hulls of Black Walnuts get rid of a lot of
different parasites in the human system, can you feed them to hogs?
An alternative would be to use the hull powdered, or a liquid extract of
the hulls mixed into hog food, which frees you up from using the hulls
only at a certain time of the year when they are available.
Wormwood-- Another great parasite herb-- Can you plant Wormwood
herb and mix it into their feed? It's useful in dislodging intestinal
parasites for excretion.
What about Garlic? Works for tapeworms, and a few others. Even
if it garlics the meat, why couldn't you "feed-out" for a while before
processing?
Another great parasiticide is Clove Bud (Eugenia Caryophyllata),
same thing you would stick into a ham. Clove gets rid of many, many
systemic parasites. As usual, it's the Clove Oil that does it.
Seems to me there are many, many dried, powdered, or fresh herbs
that could be placed into the feed or (more cost-effectively) grown on
the grounds or in hedgerows, and then just tossed in the slops.
Diatomaceous Earth may be an option for you, also. I am almost
*certain* I have seen a post somewhere by someone who was using DE with
hogs, and with success. If I find this info, I'll forward it to you.
Just my thoughts...
Namaste,
Linda Ray
PS: Thanks for posting on the Ag. Board! :-)
