Thanks and an issue for debate

Thanks to the people who responded to my request for Elaine Ingham's site. I found it.

My issue for debate is this. I was talking to one of the scientists around here the other day and the topic got to the "Green Industrial Revolution." That is, genetic engineering of plants and micro-organisms to produce industrial chemicals. His idea is that if a plant or a microbe can produce chemicals that are now made from a petroleum base, that is more environmentally sound. Reduction of petroleum use, toxic by-products, etc.

He believes there is a vast difference between genetic engineering of foodstuffs and genetic engineering for, say, plastic bags. Any comments?

I'll start by wondering if we really need plastic bags enough to bother making them by *any* means. We do, however, need insulin, rubber for bicycle tires, and colored ink for books.

Finally, as a matter of netiquette, could people please be more selective in their use of Reply buttons? Sometimes very long messages are unnecessarily flashed back to the list. I'm lucky enough not to have to pay for the messages I receive, but some people are charged on the basis of mail volume. (This is not directed at any one recent message, just a general plea.) Thanks so much.
