The Farmers' Market Trust released a study on "Public Markets: Development
and Management of Satellite Markets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania". Funded
by the USDA, the study explores the viability of creating a system of
satellite markets as part of an overall public market system. The study
provides information that can be used by developers of farmers' markets and
public markets to establish markets that provide nutritious, reasonably
priced fresh fruits and vegetables to residents of inner-city neighborhoods.
The study provides an approach others can use to analyze community
demographics, trade areas, buying power, and market demand and supply. It
presents a preliminary business plan for an indoor public market, estimates
of market rents and a pro-forma operating statement based on the financial
operations of an existing neighborhood farmers' market in Philadelphia. It
also presents architectural designs for a market layout and details
construction and development costs.
Copies of the 51-page study are available for $8.50, including shipping and
handling costs. Send a check payable to the "Farmers' Market Trust" to 1201
Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107 or fax your address and credit card
information (VISA and MC only) to 215 568-0882, Attention Meredith Stone.
