alfalfa and N scavenging

Folks: just came across a reference that might interest listmembers.
Check out the latest issue of Agronomy Journal (Vol 90:651-657;
1998) for a paper by Magarian et al. entitled Bromide as a Tracer for
Nitrate-N Uptake in Alfalfa Herbage. Among other things, they
reference published studies suggesting that alfalfa is able to remove
as much as 300 kg nitrate-N/ha/year from below the rooting depth of
most annual crops.

They make specific use of several alfalfa cultivars,
including ineffective Agate which is a single-gene mutant incapable
of N fixn. Ann
