Relief workers would need good fluency in Spanish. I'm not sure what is
meant by "ag relief" (distributing food or helping reclaim land and
restore/boost productivity sustainably). In the latter case, prior Central
American experience in hillside-farming systems (including grain crops,
cattle mgt., and small animals/mixed garden/household technologies) and
integrated soil management (technologies that enhance both conservation +
productivity) would be needed.
I spent 5 years (1990-95) in Honduras as a hillside-farming technologies
advisor to a large-scale ag development project targeting subsistence
farmers. We found that
most U.S. farm technologies, including sustainable and/or organic methods,
aren't directly transferable to Honduras without considerable modification
to suit the area's unique agro-ecological realities ranging from extreme
insect/disease pressures, climatic vagaries, and fragile/infertile soils to
socio-economic dilemmas like small farmers having to grow basic grains on
slopes of 15-60% due to inequitable land distribution, along with a high %
of land renters with insecure tenure. On the plus side, there are many
Honduran-validated technologies waiting to be re-implemented.
