Howdy, all--

The following is an information release on an upcoming event that I
thought might interest those of you who follow farmer efforts to do
value-added marketing and fair trade.

Please reply to Alicia Leinberger (below) if you want more
information on this project. Feel free to pass this along to others
you think might also want to know about it. My apologies for any
redundancy, folks.

FAMILY FARMER CHEESE EVENT,
NOVEMBER 17, 1998, IN MADISON

How can farmers capture added value for their commodities, while
building a more fair marketing structure for themselves? Is it
possible to link farmers and consumers directly, in a fair trade
relationship that benefits everyone?

Some dairy farmers and processors in Wisconsin think so, and they
want to share their ideas with you.

On Tuesday, November 17th, 1998, join Wisconsin dairy farmers and
processors as they introduce an innovative effort to help producers
create fair markets by directly linking farmers and consumers through
fairly traded cheese.

Consumers for Fair Trade,
Family Farm Defenders,
and the UW Greens

invite you to an educational gathering about

the Family Farmer Cheese Project:

6:30 p.m.--reception with cheese tasting
7:00 p.m.--presentation of Family Farmer Cheese Project

Pres House, 731 State St., Madison, WI

John Kinsman, president, Family Farm Defenders, will offer an
overview of milk marketing regulation schemes that have affected
Wisconsin farmers, consumers, and their communities.

Francis Goodman, organic dairy farmer, Wonewoc, WI, and FFD member,
will share his thoughts on the everyday impact of market imbalances
from a farm family's perspective.

Bob Wills, owner of Cedar Grove Dairy cheese factory, Plain, WI, will
discuss his decision to partner with family dairy farmers to guarantee
them a fair price for their milk...and a high-quality cheese that they
can directly market to consumers.
