Ann,
But if the nitrate is already down there, by the time the alfalfa
is well established most the the nitrate may have already leached (at
least under fairly humid climatic conditions). If you're dealing with more
of a dryland situation, the year or two between when the problem was
discovered and the alfalfa roots actually start taking up nitrates may not
matter because of the slow rate of leaching. As usual, it's hard to
generalize.
