Rob,
Don't let the incomplete economists "bludgeon" you into cooperation. That is really _finance_, not economics. True economics of any system would take into account all the non-market values and costs associated with human activities. Because it is very difficult and often controversial to do this, and because these non-market values and costs usually don't directly affect the beneficiaries of the activity (eg mining, farming, forestry, manufacturing), most of the time business folks just ignore all that -- governments, on behalf of present and future citizenry, should strive to be more comprehensive (or, is that economically holistic?) in its policymaking.
Stick with it....
BOB

It's not "perfect" - I still get frustrated at times with the paradigm
which I perceive as informing arguments for "economic efficiency" at the cost of things which aren't valued in markets, like preserving local land in agriculture - but I'm young yet, and idealistic; I haven't been bludgeoned into cooperation by the weight of economic theory.
