Grassroots Policy Organizer
The Land Stewardship Project (LSP), a grassroots membership organization based
in Minnesota, is seeking an energetic, experienced organizer to work in the
organizationŐs Policy Program. The goals of LSPŐs Policy Program are to: 1)
Build powerful citizen action that advances policies at the local, state,
regional, federal, and corporate levels in favor of livestock dispersal on
diversified family farms, sustainable farming practices and a sustainable food
system, fair access to markets and innovative marketing approaches, widespread
environmental and community stewardship, and corporate accountability; and 2)
Develop more strong leaders in rural communities and amongst farmers who speak
and work effectively for land stewardship and a sustainable food and agriculture
system.
Job Description
The grassroots policy organizer will work primarily in the Livestock
Concentration and Factory Farms program area. The organizer will work with the
Policy Program director and the programŐs lead organizer to achieve program
goals. The position is a full-time organizing position that will frequently
include evening and weekend work. The start date is 12/1/98. Specific roles
include:
- organizing with hog farmers to end the mandatory pork checkoff
- organizing LSP members and interested citizens to significantly impact state
legislation dealing with factory farms and other livestock issues;
- local organizing to stop proposed factory farms or pass local ordinances;
- other organizing and activities as prioritized in program plans;
- participating in strategic planning in the program;
- issue research and analysis;
- recruiting new members and developing new leaders in the organization;
- participating in organization-wide membership development strategies;
- responding to calls and correspondence from members and other citizens
requesting assistance or information;
- assisting the program director in written communications, compiling program
and grant reports, database management, and other administrative tasks as
necessary.
Qualifications
- two years rural organizing experience, with a focus on farm issues;
- strong background in organizing as part of a membership organization;
- strong written and verbal communication skills;
- travel around the state of Minnesota and the Upper Midwest will require the
organizer to own a reliable vehicle and have a current driverŐs license.
- proven record of being able to work closely with a team;
- initiative and accountability.
Compensation
The job will pay in the range of $23,000 to $26,000 per year to start. Full
health insurance will be paid for by LSP.
