The suburbs remind me of spoiled children. They should see Des Moines as =
an elderly parent; one who has given them their very being. Instead they =
often act like impatient heirs, who simply wish Des Moines would just =
die, so they could take some of the good stuff and get on with life. And =
the suburbs continue to grow. While 3,900 acres of farmland in Polk =
County was converted from ag use to development in 1996; 5,500 lots set =
empty in downtown Des Moines.
