Executive Director of the Henry A. Wallace Institute for Alternative
Agriculture
The Board of Directors of the Henry A. Wallace Institute for Alternative
Agriculture seeks to fill the position of Executive Director. The
successful candidate for this position must have a demonstrated record of
experience in sustainable agriculture and food systems and a commitment to
the successful implementation of the vision of the Wallace Institute.

While the successful candidate should have substantial understanding of the
technical and scientific aspects of sustainable production systems, it is
especially important that candidates understand and appreciate the social,
economic, and policy dimensions and requirements of moving toward a more
sustainable food system. We seek a dynamic, proactive person to design and
implement creative program initiatives consistent with the Institute's vision.
Responsibilities
The Executive Director is responsible for:
- program execution and day-to-day administration of the Institute's staff
and programs, including budgeting and personnel;
- maintaining close contact with the Board of Directors to ensure the
implementation of Board policies while at the same time innovatively
responding to the changing economic and political environment;
- fund raising, planning, and program development;
- maintaining visibility with the scientific, farming, food system, and
policy communities;
- ensuring collaborative activities with other not-for-profit
organizations; and
- overseeing the publication of the American Journal of Alternative
Agriculture and the monthly newsletter, Alternative Agriculture News.
Qualifications
- Advanced degree;
- Nationally recognized expertise in a field related directly to
sustainable food systems;
- Excellent writing and speaking skills;
- Proven fund raising success;
- Ability to reach out to diverse constituencies; and
- Commitment to the vision of the Institute and social entrepreneurial drive.
Proposed Start Date
June 1, 1999, to ensure overlap with the current Executive Director.
Salary
Commensurate with training and experience.
