Community Food Security Project Coordinator
The Rural Development Center: The Rural Development Center is a community
based agricultural and resource center serving farmworkers and family
farmers in the Salinas Valley. We promote self-reliance by helping
aspiring/established family farmers gain the skills and experience they need
to initiate/enhance their own agriculture operations and improve the
economic condition. RDC staff are bilingual and most educational activities
are conducted in Spanish. Our programs include: (1) a Small Farm Education
Program, a five-month intensive education and training program on small farm
production and management, with a strong emphasis on sustainable practices;
(2) Training and technical assistance in sustainable practices to family
farmers-in-training on the RDC property; (3) Outreach, training and
technical support to established Latino farmers in the region, to address
pollution prevention and environmental justice issues; and (4) a Food
Security Project to help low-income people in the region gain access to
affordable fresh organic vegetables, partly through the creation of a
farmer's market, community gardens, Community Supported Agriculture
initiatives and a Youth Project.
Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Center Director, the Project
coordinator will organize and take part in a Community Food Security
Collaborative comprised of a diverse group of non-profits, individuals, and
city and county agencies to 1) initiate food related projects, such as
community gardens, low-income farmer's markets, and food access assessments,
and 2) impact city and county policies regarding food access and production.
The coordinator will educate members of the collaborative and the public
about community food security concepts. The coordinator will organize a
community garden in Salinas and coordinate technical assistance to the
gardeners. The coordinator will work with RDC farmers and WIC to promote
and develop a low-income farmer's market in Salinas. The coordinator will
also work with local schools to educate youth about sustainable agriculture
and food systems.
Qualifications: Excellent written and oral communication skills in both
English and Spanish, familiarity with the condition and culture of the
farmworker community, and experience in working with these constituencies is
highly desirable. In addition, the position requires:
· Strong practical experience, knowledge and understanding of the Salinas
Valley agricultural economy, and society
· practical experience, knowledge, and understanding of sustainable
agriculture and organic gardening,
· ability to develop relationships and resources to support the project
· flexibility and willingness to perform diverse tasks; willingness to work
on a varying schedule (e.g. evening and weekend classes, meeting, and
events); and willingness and ability to travel.
