I don't know whether this is a true story or not, but it is illustrative of the
issue of bias and the desire to put aside the scientific method as an
assessment tool in favour of pure personal opinion/experience...

The story:
During the cultural revolution in China, the workers in a factory were
discussing how to increase production. One worker had the brilliant
idea of just speeding up the machinery on the line by increasing the
speed or gearing of the drive mechanism. The (former) plant engineer
-- already suspect because of his education -- expressed concern that
the line might fail because the bearings would overheat if run faster than
their design speed. His anti-revolutionary thinking was rejected and the
plant went ahead with the plan.
Of course, the bearings did quickly overheat and the entire factory had
to shut down indefinitely (you guessed it, parts aren't easily available).
The engineer was sent to a re-education camp since it was obvious that
he must have sabotaged the equipment.
