This story is well-told in the following book, which you will enjoy for
other reasons as well:
Fowler, Cary and Pat Mooney
1990 Shattering: Food, Politics and the Loss of Genetic Diversity. Tucson:
Univeristy of Arizona Press.
There was also a TV program/video, based on the book and in which the
authors collaborated. It dramatically covers the whole saga of Vavilov's
institute, which is still one of the most important seed collections in the
world and is still in trouble. You might try to get a copy of the video,
it is excellent for classroom use.
Warm regards,
Ronald Nigh
