Since 1950, the number of acreage under cultivation has remained
constant about 350 acres but the number of people living and working on
these farms has dropped by 50%
The number of farms in operation has been reduced by 3 million and
continues to drop at the rate of 2000 per week since the 1940’s
240% increase in corn-yield-per-acre between 1945-1970 was the result of
a 310% in energy used to produce it
1970 corn production averaged 81 bushels an acre, but the equivalent of
80 gallons of gasoline was needed to produce the crop
