Rob,
The only way I have seen this used is with respect to dairy cow
rations. And it implies a high % concentrate (grain) relative to forages
(hay, haylage, corn silage, pasture). The idea is to"push" cows to as high
production as possible. But too "hot" a ration creates problems such as
acidosis which leads to foot problems (laminitis). There was a recent
report from the Miner Institute (in upstate NY) where they tried the idea
of feeding a very high energy (hot) ration to their highest producing
cows. They used 42% forages and 58% concentrate (dry matter basis) and ran
into real trouble. They felt that the hot humid weather was what "pushed"
the cows over, but mention that the animals were "perilously close to the
edge..." because of the very high energy ration.
