Cecile Mills, are you sure your "wilt" is not "late blight". Here on
Vancouver Island last year we lost nearly all potato and tomato crops to
late blight. Dark spots on the top side of the leaves that show through a
lighter colour on the bottom side. On tomatoes a whole side branch at a
time goes. My tomatoes are in an unheated plastic greenhouse. Last year
the blight (which had already gone through the potato patch) hit just as
the crop was reaching full production. With no cure from the scientists or
old timers, I started cutting off all affected branches right at the main
stem. The plants looked sad with five feet or more of no leaves but there
was no sun scald on the tops of tomatoes because the weather was grey and
wet. I was able to bring in at least half of the normal crop. At the
first sign of a spot on one leaf, cut off the entire branch and you may
save some of your crop. This year has been hot and dry and there has been
little sign of blight.

Good luck,
Don Maroc
