Warren Porter, outgoing chair of the UW-Madison Dept. of Zoology and
CIAS Faculty Associate, has tracked glyphosate safety in scientific
literature. I asked him whether he had any citations for research on
this topic. Below is his response.
His point #4 refers to the 3rd World Congress on Herpetology, in
Prague, last August 2-10 ('97). The URL I have for that event is
Warren is currently on sabbatical.

Michele,
If someone is inclined to dismiss glyphosate as safe, they should
check out
1) C. Clements, S. Ralph and M. Petras. 1997. Genotoxicity of select
herbicides in Rana catesbeiana tadpoles using the alkaline single-cell
gel DNA electrophoresis (comet) assay. Env. & Molec. Mutagenesis
29(3):277-88.
2) Yousef, M.I., M.H. Salem, H.Z. Ibrahim, S. Helmi, M.A. Seehy and K.
Bertheussen. 1995. Toxic effects of carbofuran and glyphosate on semen
characteristics in rabbits. J. Env. Sci. & Health. - Part B:
Pesticides, Food Contaminants, & Ag. Wastes. 30(4): 513-34.
3) Wester, R.C., D. Ouan and H.I. Maibach. 1996. In vitro percutaneous
absorption of model compounds glyphosate and malathion from cotton
fabric into and through human skin. Food & Chem. Toxic. 34(8): 731-5.
4) Glyphosate and a number of related herbicides have recently been
banned from use near waterways in Australia because it has been
found that the surfactants in these herbicides are more toxic than
the parent compounds. They interfere with the normal surfactants in
larval skins causing serious disruption of ion exchanges across the
skin, which is lethal to the larvae. This was reported in August,
1997, in several papers at the International Herpetological Congress
in Prague. I don't know the status of the publication of those
reports. I am pretty sure at least one of them is out now.
Best,
Warren
