Gordon,
I think what we need is two lists. Sanet-pr and Sanet-bs
The first one would be sanet-pr for practical information for farmer,
producers, acedemics and consumers who are interested in practical
information on making a sustainable agriculture work such as marketing,
grazing, cover crops, livestock, vegetables, organic production, reduced
chemical use, conservation practices, building strong rural communities,
etc.
The second one could be Sanet-BS. I hope I don't have to explain this
one. There is a need for discussing all the negative issues surrounding
conventional agriculture. But I personally beleive it is more important to
talk about the nuts and bolts issues that sustainable farmers face in their
operations on a day to day basis because there is a larger need for
practical, profitable information to get more farmers to adapt sustainable
practices. We discuss issues on this list like we already have a
sustainable agriculture system. We argue about the minor philosophical
differences of an almost NON EXISTANT SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE. If the
majority of farmers were sustainable, it would make sense to debate the
details. I've said all along that we have a serious problem with the
content of the Sanet. If a prospective sustainable farmer would happen upon
this list, does anybody have a good idea what their impression of
sustainable agriculture would be? I agree that the majority of the content
of the sanet needs to change to reflect the needs of sustainable farmers. I
think the easiest way to accomplish this would be to form two lists. They
wouldn't have to use my choice of names!
Best wishes,
Greg
