The recent flurry of activity about GE and Monsanto has been
interesting. During the last few weeks Monsanto has had adds in the
Sunday Times Magazine section which I have purchased as I am in
Ireland. I suspect it is the London Times-it is printed in Irealnd
but it is full of UK news. For those of you in the US it is a paper
somewhat like the NY Times and the adds have dealt with various
subjects. The adds are full page usually the last page of the
magazine section. The three I have seen have the following titles.
1. FOOD LABELLING. IT HAS MONSANTO'S FULL BACKING.

2. WE BELIEVE FOOD SHOULD BE GROWN WITH LESS PESTICIDE.

3. WORRYING ABOUT STARVING FUTURE GENERATIONS WON'T FEED
THEM. FOOD BIOTECHNOLOGY WILL.

The text of the first one follows.

Before you buy a potato or, or any other food you may want to know
whether it's the product of food biotechnology.

Monsanto is leading biotechnology company. Our potato, corn and
soybean seeds are adapted to produce better yields through control
of pests and weeds. In a step from traditional crossbreeding, a
naturally occurring benifical gene has been inserted into the plants
make-up.

Rigorous tests have been undertaken throughout Monsanto's 20 year biotech
history to ensure our food crops are safe and nutritious as the
standard alternatives. We have complete confidence that they are.
So do the government reulatory agencies of 20 countries<including the
UK> who have approved them.

Recently you may have noticed a label appearing on of the food in
your supermarket. This is to inform you about the use of
biotechnology in food.

Monsanto fully supports UK food manufacturers and retailers in their
introduction of these labels. We believe you should be aware of all
the facts before making a purchase. We encourage you to look out for
these lables. And, if you'd like to know, please ask for a leaflet
at your supermarket, call our consumer information line on 0800 092
0401, or visit our website at www.monsanto.co.uk.

That is it folks.

I wonder whether they have a program for Europe and a different one for the US.
They sure have not been open about the use of BST or BGH. In my
experience they have done everything to stop information about use of
BGH getting to the public. Does anyone have any information that
they have changed their stance on the BGH issues in the US? Are they
now informing people about who is using the stuff and letting the
public know what is going on or are they still in the stonewalling
mode they have always been in and fighting anyone that attempt to
sell dairy products that say they do not use BGH.

These adds are obviously costly. It would appear that they are
trying to assure the general public in Europe that biotech is the way
to go and Monsanto is the company to deliver product that will result
in less pesticides being used and that one way to solve the hunger
problem is by employing the their products.
