Some planty URLs for you as a Lammas gift.
---On-Line Glossary of Technical Terms in Plant Pathology
http://ppathw3.cals.cornell.edu/Glossary/Glossary.htm
Cornell University's Department of Plant Pathology provides this
online glossary of technical terms in plant pathology. From abaxial to
zygote, this lengthy resource offers definitions accompanied by
diagrams, photographs, reference texts, and pronunciation options.
There are also links to sound files, which let you hear the word
pronounced, and illustrations.
---Plants of Horticulture
http://www.hcs.ohio-state.edu/hcs/htr/pmTOC.html
A searchable database of 1,071 high quality images and horticultural
descriptions for 591 selected ornamental plants. You can search for
specific plants by their scientific name (genus and species), family
name, or common name. Alternatively, you can select a category of
plants and all matches will be displayed.
---Gardening Tools--NGA
http://www2.garden.org/nga/edit/tools.html
The tools are two data bases offered by the U.S. National Gardening
Association. One is a dictionary of horticulture, the other a plant
name finder. The databases are seachable, though the search engine is
a little rudimentary.
---Curriculum resources for ornamental horticulture
http://boisdarc.tamu-commerce.edu/www/e/epannell/pannell.html
A nice set of links to on-line resources in categories: general
horticulture, pests and answers, and hort databases.
---Botany links, Rhodes College
http://blair.library.rhodes.edu/biolhtmls/botany.html
A honkin' list of botany links as part of the Rhodes College biology
links project. Find the Harmful Algae Page, the Botanical Dermatology
Database, the Carnivorous Plant Database, the Poisonous Plants Web
Pages, the Review and Atlas of Paleovegetation, the Virtual Cell, and
Mushroompeople (guarantees its mushroom spawn to be healthy and
vigorous or your money back; worth checking out just for the
animation of a row of mushroompeople running back and forth,
popping their caps).
---University of Maryland--Plants: common and scientific names
http://www.lib.umd.edu/UMCP/MCK/GUIDES/plant_names.html
This site offers a selected list of *printed* information sources for
plant names for both the United States and the world. The topics
range from Plants in General, to specific categories such as Exotic
Plants and Trees, Shrubs and Vines. The areas covered include:
Taxonomy, Classification and Nomenclature of plants. While keyed to
items in the UM libraries, bibliographic information and Library of
Congress call numbers are of use no matter where you are. Nice source
of field guides and reference-shelf-builders.
And what the heck, while we're at it, the source of all life and the
place to which we all, hopefully, return (except for those of us who
come from other planets or Petri dishes):
---The Soil Science Society of America glossary of soil science terms
http://www.soils.org/sssagloss/
Starting with A horizon and running thru zymogenous flora. Golly.
It's searchable, but I couldn't get the booger to let me browse it.
