This conversation strikes the heart of on-farm research. For example,
must on-farm research plots have replicated trials and controls?
I would suggest that the degree to which on-farm research projects do
comport to the accepted standards of the scientific method determines
the measure they part from anecdote.
Trialing without replication and controls is valid anecdotal
information, and useful in suggesting what is worthy of replicating.
While farmers often try new things without controls, if they work poorly
they are rarely repeated.
