I am pleased to announce that the California Sustainable Agriculture Working
Group and the Community Food Security Coalition will be compiling and writing
a Food Policy Action Guide during Summer and Fall of 1998. The purpose of
this project is to produce an Action Guide (available in late 1998) that will
help local advocates develop policy and planning approaches that support a
more integrated local food system. The guide will include an inventory of
local food policies, an exploration of model projects, and advice from experts
on how to implement local food policy.
At this stage in the project, we are seeking information and input about local
food policy and planning activities for inclusion in the Action Guide. If you
are involved in local food policy, or if you know of any contacts or

Specifically, we are looking for answers to these questions based on your
knowledge or experience:
-What existing efforts to integrate food systems through local food policy
councils would provide valuable models for new initiatives?
-What other kinds of work has occurred to examine, change, or implement
specific local policies affecting food systems?
-What publications and organization contacts would be helpful resources for
advocates getting involved in local food policy?
-What local (city or county) government programs, functions or services
contain potential channels for implementing food policy and planning?
With help from experienced food policy advocates, we hope to compile a helpful
resource for local practitioners. This Action Guide is an opportunity to not
only share your experiences with advocates in other areas, but also to promote
and publicize the work your group has done. Your help is greatly appreciated;
