Frank,

I had an extension agent look at my soil test report and almost faint when he
saw 140 lb. per acre of nitrogen. He thought I had a salt buildup. What he
didn't know (and maybe still doesn't) is that most of the nitrogen in my soil
is in the soil life and not in the soil as a salt. I add only compost (1/2 - 1%
N) that I make from on farm material and mineral amendments.

You can get too much nitrogen from chemicals, but not from compost. That's the
difference.
