Actually, I heard that modern hybrids did lousy in trials against the
landraces in Mexico. When the summer dry spell came, the local crops put out
ears & the "improved" varieties got stopped in their tracks. Local corn
produced a second crop & the hybrids never recovered from the midseason
drought, which is typical to the region.
