Steve: good thoughts, well articulated. I would add, however, that
perhaps we should start by acknowledging that a) society has come to
expect certain things (for reasons having little to do with actual
need or value), including cheap food; b) reversing that trend is not
going to be an overnight affair, but rather, a long, drawn-out, "one
tomato at a time" exercise; c) it is counterproductive to be
constantly berating oneself or others for the slow rate of progress
in the turnaround; d) people ARE beginning to think differently, and
act differently, as manifested in many ways, including the growth of
CSA's, demand for organic food, organizations and people like
yourself implementing innovative initiatives to broaden
accessibility, and the many conferences, grant sources, etc. that are
constantly being referenced on SANET.

I guess what I am saying is "patience is a virtue", and this is
nowhere more true than when trying to swing public values in a wholly
new direction. It is happening - perhaps not fast enough for our
tastes - but it is happening. I would urge you, and others, to keep
up the great work, don't become discouraged, debilitated, and
disenfranchised at what may seem to be the slow pace of change.
Be happy and take credit for what IS happening. You are doing your
part in leading the way. Ann
