In the first place there were no "inane" discussions on sanet relating
to suicides. The post you read that contained information on farmer
suicides was a single news article.
Secondly, I find it interesting that the very reason these
farmers were committing suicide is related to the very thread
that you are glad to see come about..... profitability for farmers. Had
these Indian farmers experienced more profit instead of more
debt--incurred I might add as a result of adopting the conventional
agriculture model rather than the 4,000 year old sustainable agriculture
that existed in India prior to colonialism and the Green Revolution--that
article would not even exist.
I recall very clearly in the mid-1980s as an extension agent in
Oklahoma when we were dealing with a farm crisis in the Midwest.
Farmers and farm wives were committing suicide because they were
going through bankruptcy. One woman set her house on fire, then she
walked into the fire to her death. Kansas and Oklahoma set up
crisis hot lines to counsel farm families on how to cope with the terrible
loss of land and home due to DEBT.
