I have always had a garden and laboratory since age 5. Became a
Christian in high school. I was going to major in biochem, but was
fascinated by the human-oriented practicality of Agronomy. Ended up
getting a Ph.D. in Agronomy, doing work on seed physiology and small
farmer seed problems in Colombia. Professor at Univ of Idaho from 1986
- 1996 (80% research, 20% extension). Started doing sweet corn breeding
as a hobby. I have a wife and 4 cool children. Soured on constant
search for money and trivial papers, I took a job as QA manager with
Ciba Seeds (Funks) immediately before the production department was
ingested by NK in the Ciba-Sandoz merger (what luck!). Got laid off and
found a job at Pioneer doing production and testing research.
Annoyed and baffled by stuff I was hearing from the environmentalists, I
determined a few years ago to make contacts and develop dialogue
(getting on Sanet was part of this effort). Around same time developed
a taste for history and philosophy, especially the philosophy of
science. Wrote a paper on environmentalism and another on the meaning
of "Distinctively agricultural research" but never submitted them to a
journal because I was unhappy with them (I'm looking for collaborators).
I am also looking for collaborators who want to develop high-quality OP
sweet corns.
BTW, is there an archive of peoples backgrounds on this listserver? I
would like to find out more about people here.
Dale
