Another note from 7Feb'98 New Scientist pertinent to this discussion:
3-nitrobenzanthrone (a nitro-PAH found in diesel exhaust fumes) was
tested .... "When the Japanese researchers performed the Ames test, a
standard measure of a compound's cancer-causing potency ---
calculated by adding it to a strain of Salmonella typhimurium to see how
many mutations it causes --- the compound scored the highest number
ever for that test. The researcher's also found that it caused
chromosomal aberrations in the blood cells of mice -- a measure of the
compound's mutagenicity."
So, trucks, trains and tractors all spew an extremely carcinogenic and
mutagenic chemical into the air we breathe. While researchers strive to
make diesel exhaust less harmful (cleaner), the rest of us just put up
with the risk in the meantime since we don't perceive any practical
alternative...
