1. How important is contract production in organic agriculture, and
is this different between agronomic and horticultural crops? I know
most, if not all, organic edible soybeans are contract grown, but
this is sort of a niche within a niche. Can crops be considered
"specialty" , and be produced and marketed accordingly, simply
because they are certified organic?
2. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that organic producers
(especially fruit and veg.) in hot, humid southern
regions of the country are having difficulty competing with producers
in the semi-arid West because of the higher cost of organic weed and pest
control in the South. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
Has anyone written anything on this subject?
Thanks for all your help with past questions!
