Calif's pesticide reporting laws

Hi all -

Someone asked if California's pesticide reporting laws included herbicides,
not just insecticides. Legally (in Calif. and I believe in the US), the
definition of pesticide is something designed to kill all the things we
consider pests, including plants (herbicides), insects (insecticides),
rodents (rodenticides), etc. Therefore, all registered pesticides used by
farmers and professional applicators are required to be reported under
California's pesticide reporting laws. Most are reported monthly, although
use of the most toxic ones (California Registered Materials) have to be
PRE-notified. (NOTE: Home use by individuals is not required to be
reported.)

However, as useful as it is to HAVE this info rather than not, what is DONE
with that information by government officials is less than what we might
hope. As Diane Cooner says, most of the info is just stored without really
impacting usage patterns. However, it is a tool that neighbors and
activists are finding ways to use in their actions to try to inform and
protect their communities.

Best regards -
